Amnesty International lumps Trump with global dictators who violate human rights
Feb. 22: On This Day In 2018
Trump & Xi & Putin, sittin’ in a tree...
Trump’s actions helped pave the way for abuses around the world.
“The transparently hateful move by the U.S. government in January (2017) to ban entry to people from several Muslim-majority countries set the scene for a year in which leaders took the politics of hate to its most dangerous conclusion,” reported Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International, OTDI 2018.
He continued: “(Upon taking office) President Trump wasted little time in putting his anti-rights rhetoric of discrimination and xenophobia into action, threatening a major rollback on justice and freedoms – including by signing a series of repressive executive orders that threatened the human rights of millions, at home and abroad. This included abusive USA-Mexico border enforcement practices…; extreme restrictions on women’s and girls’ access to sexual and reproductive health services in the USA and elsewhere; repeal of protections for LGBTI workers and transgender students…”
The snowballing impacts: Amnesty International warned that President Trump’s backward steps on human rights help set a dangerous precedent for other governments to follow. “The specters of hatred and fear now loom large in world affairs, and we have few governments standing up for human rights in these disturbing times.
“Instead, leaders such as al-Sisi, Duterte, Maduro, Putin, Trump and Xi are callously undermining the rights of millions,” said Shetty.
That's a list you don't really want to be included on, right?
